Class: Sashiko Sampler #2 - Kakinohana (Persimmon Flower)

A 12-Month Study in Traditional Japanese Stitching, Pattern & Visible Mending

Join us for a year-long exploration of sashiko, a traditional Japanese running-stitch technique rooted in textile repair, reinforcement, and resourcefulness. Each monthly workshop introduces a new traditional pattern while building upon skills from previous classes.

Students will create one stitched fabric block each month, gradually building a collection of 12 blocks that can eventually become a quilt, curtain, wall hanging, or other textile project. The techniques learned throughout the series can also be carried into future visible-mending projects on clothing and household textiles.

PART I — HITOMEZASHI

Building Your Sashiko Foundation (Months 1-6)

The first six workshops introduce Hitomezashi, a grid-based style of sashiko in which simple running stitches build increasingly intricate geometric patterns.

These classes are designed as individual workshops, so you do not need to start with Month 1. However, each class builds upon skills introduced in the previous patterns, so students are encouraged to take as many of the first six as possible.

Supplies (not included in cost of class):

¼ yd fabric of your choice (recommended: plain weave cotton, linen, or denim) to be cut into 7 ⅜ in width x 10 ¼ in height blocks

Sashiko Thread (samples were made using Standard/Thick Thread for all of the patterns, but you can choose whether you prefer a thin or thick weight thread)
